Less than 10 minutes:​

  • Coldstream: a quaint village with a free country park “The Hirsel”, riverside walks, co-op and a number of award winning restaurants and takeaways.

  • Flodden field - a must for history buffs. 

  • Ford and Etal estates with its castle and charming steam railway.

  • Kimmerston horse riding centre.

  • Twizell castle - see the ruined castle, some of it's stone was used to build the railway stations and cottages like ours. 

  • Yetholm: attractive village nestled at the start of the Cheviots.

  • Mindrum Garden.

  • The Cheviot hills and St Cuthbert’s way. 

Less than 30 minutes:

  • The Heritage coastline of North Northumberland with: Bamburgh Castle, RNLI Grace Darling Museum, Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Seahouses, Craster and the Farne Islands.

  • Wooler an attractive Cheviot town with a range of shops and pubs.

  • Billy Shiels Farne island seal and puffin spotting trips.

  • Dunstanburgh castle.

  • Chillingham castle with it’s wild Highland cattle.

  • Jedburgh.

  • Kelso: attractive border town containing Floors castle and the Abbey.

An hour away:

  • Alnwick, where Harry Potter was filmed, with its historic castle and the famous Alnwick Gardens.

  • Hadrians Wall.

  • Newcastle.

  • Kielder - make sure to search for Northern lights at the Kielder observatory.

  • Warkworth castle.

  • Edinburgh.

  • Berwick - castle and ramparts.

  • Cragside.

Activities

 

We have a list of five star, local, dog friendly pubs near the cottage in our guidebook. The Bluebell Inn in Crookham is a particular favourite with visitors. The Bluebell boasts a wood burning stove, an impressive selection of real ales and home cooked food. Visit the website here. 

At Briar Cottage you won’t have trouble finding something to do, your only problem will be choosing from the enormous range of historical sights and activities. Nestled between Northumberland National Park, the Cheviot hills and the Heritage coast line you will be spoiled for choice.
